It's an endearingly cliche story about dorkass loserswith a battle system that gives you a blank slate to go as deep as you want, and it's the kind of JRPG that doesn't get made like it should anymore.The Tales of series is one of the most renowned JRPG franchises in the gaming world. Tales is at its best when the heroes feel like schlubs picked off the side of the road and told that the world needs saving so hop to it. The characters are stock archetypes but the game devotes a good chunk of time to letting them banter and vibe with each other (and in no small part thanks to the Skits, which balance casual chatting, foreshadowing and character interplay real nicely), and there's this really endearing vibe of cutthroat cynicism to its characters where even they feel not just unqualified, but that they can't believe they're the ones who have to save the world. On the other hand, it's fun! It's a very simple and raw kind of game where the complexity in the combat comes as you put the work in and it's old enough that the RPG Class System hadn't left Tales yet so every character has a cool and unique role to play in battles, and is also old enough that the dungeons have puzzles to solve instead of just being linear corridors. On one hand, its legacy is absolutely thanks to being an anime JRPG in that genre's heyday thrown to the starved wolves of Nintendo children without their big swords and spiky hair.
